A Thanksgiving Message to American Baptists – November 22, 2022

I stretch out my hands to God and give thanks for every American Baptist. Thank you for continuing to build upon such a rich legacy of American leaders in your mission, ministry, and discipleship.

Whether you are at home or traveling, entertaining or being entertained, with toddlers, teenagers, octogenarians, or enjoying a moment of solitude, enjoying a traditional meal or relishing in a vegetarian plate, I hope that you have a renewing and restful holiday weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

Regrettably, these days, it seems that in every moment of thanksgiving lies an element of despair. Please also remember in prayer those for whom this week brings such sorrow following the mass shootings in Colorado Springs, the University of Virginia, and the atrocities that continue in Myanmar. In tragic moments, I cling to the despair as well as the hope portrayed by the Psalmists…

“One of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! I wait for the Lord, my soul waits; and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning” (Psalm 130:1,2,5,6)

In whatever emotion that you are experiencing, may God be present with you this weekend.
