ABHMS Announces Changes to its Chaplaincy Ministries

VALLEY FORGE, PA (4/27/17)—American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) announces that it has renamed one of its ministries, for which it has appointed a new associate director.

To reflect greater inclusivity of those who serve in specialized ministry settings, “Chaplaincy and Pastoral Counseling Ministries” is now “Chaplaincy and Specialized Ministries.” ABHMS recognizes that spiritual directors, campus ministers, life coaches and others in specialized ministries—in addition to chaplains and pastoral counselors—are integral to ABHMS’ mission and ministry as well as to the denomination.

The Rev. Dr. Patricia Murphy has been named associate director for Chaplaincy and Specialized Ministries. An American Baptist-endorsed chaplain, she had been serving as the Protestant and palliative care chaplain at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island, Brooklyn. American Baptist ordained, Murphy had also been serving as associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Queens, N.Y.

Murphy earned a D.Min. from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.; an M.Div. from New York Theological Seminary, New York City; and a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. In addition, she holds a post-graduate Montefiore-Einstein Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, New York City.

Based at the Mission Center in Valley Forge, she can be reached at patricia.murphy@abhms.org or 1.800.222.3872, x2050.
