ABHMS Presents Human Resources Webinar About New Department of Labor ‘Wage and Hour Division’ Rule

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 7/18/16)—American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) will present a complimentary webinar—“Implications of the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) New Wage and Hour Rule”—on Aug. 4, 2016, at 2 p.m.

Specifically designed for American Baptist mission partners, the webinar focuses on a new DOL rule, which takes effect Dec. 1, 2016, that increases the salary threshold for exempt employees to $47,476 per year ($913 per week). The rule— issued in May 2016—significantly increases the number of workers eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The most significant change made by the DOL in years, the rule requires a reassessment of staff entitled to overtime pay along with staff qualifying for exemption. ABHMS’ webinar will provide guidance related to this overtime rule and assist American Baptist employers seeking to:

  • understand the rule’s provisions and salary thresholds;
  • correctly apply FLSA exemptions and duties tests;
  • distinguish between “employee” and “independent contractor”; and
  • discover strategies for complying with new overtime regulations.

The FLSA requires employers to pay employees at least the federal minimum wage and overtime compensation for all hours worked above 40 in a workweek. Overtime pay must be at least 1½ times an employee’s regular rate of pay. Some employees, however, are exempt from the FLSA’s overtime requirement. The most common exemptions apply to highly-compensated executive, administrative, professional, sales and technology employees. The FLSA was enacted during the Great Depression to set minimum wage, overtime pay, record keeping and child labor standards.
