American Baptist Historical Society Announces Call for Papers for Torbet Prize

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 1/17/19)—The American Baptist Historical Society (ABHS) announces a Call for Papers for the Torbet Prize. This $500 award is given yearly for the best essay in any area of Baptist History. Each year ABHS solicits essays from authors who have not already been published in a major scholarly work. Doctoral and advanced Master’s level students are especially invited to submit a paper.

The Research and Publication Committee of the ABHS Board of Managers will assess the entries, and the winning essay will be published in an upcoming issue of the American Baptist Quarterly. The submission deadline is September 1, 2019.

Entries should be no more than 7500 words, with sources cited following the Chicago Manual of Style.  Send entries to ABHSoffice@ABHSarchives.org.

Robert George Torbet  (1912-1995) was an American Baptist historian and educator, born in Spokane, WA and later a graduate of Wheaton College, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Pennsylvania.  He taught church history at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1944-1952),  served as director of educational services for the Board of Education and Publication (1952-1958), as dean and church history professor at Central Baptist Theological Seminary (1958-1967), and as Associate General Secretary for Ecumenical Relations of the ABC (1967-1977).  His major contributions to Baptist research and publication led the American Baptist Historical Society to establish a prize in his honor to encourage the development of young scholars in the field of Baptist history studies.

Founded in 1853, the American Baptist Historical Society cares for the largest and most diverse collection of Baptist materials in the world and publishes the oldest Baptist historical journal, the American Baptist Quarterly. Researchers come from around the globe to research the contributions Baptists have made to church and society.  For more information visit our web site: www.ABHSarchives.org.
