VALLEY FORGE, PA (3/2/22)—“Asian Americans and Burmese History: Immigration Experiences in America and the Impacts of Racism”—the first session of American Baptist Home Mission Societies’ (ABHMS) Asian and Burmese training series—will be held 7-8:30 p.m. ET on March 24. This session will be held virtually at no charge.
Participants will gain critical knowledge about the immigration experiences of Asian Americans and consider how the past informs the ongoing rise of anti-Asian sentiment and acts of violence. The training will also equip ministry leaders with a compassionate understanding of God’s creation.
Although the training will focus on Asian Americans, it is open to anyone to provide wider engagement on the impact of racism on other marginalized communities.
Speakers Dr. Russell Jeung and Dr. Angelene Naw will present the history of Asian Americans in the United States as well as the history of Burma and current realities that are prompting immigration to the United States.
Jeung is professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people for 2021. He brings a wealth of experience from his encounters with Asian American communities.
Emerita professor of History, Judson University, Elgin, Ill., and former associate professor of History, University of Yangon, Naw brings her historical knowledge of the diaspora movement in the United States and racism against ethnic minority groups in Burma.
