Kent Ulery, president of the Bangor Theological Seminary (BTS), presented Patti Stratton, vice president of American Baptist Churches USA, with the 2011 Haney Award for Social Justice during the BTS graduation ceremony on May 20, 2011. He told me the award given by unanimous vote by the seminary faculty. The award was accompanied by a $750 scholarship.
The award reads, "The Faculty of Bangor Theological Seminary presents to Patti Stratton the 2011 Haney Award for Social Justice to encourage a prophet-in-waiting to take up the task of speaking the truth no matter what the cost."
The photo to the right is of Patti and Rev. Dr. Glenn Miller.
Miller is an American Baptist who recently retired from BTS and was made a history professor emeritus for BTS at the graduation ceremony.
Haney Award for Social Justice Presentation
"A fund was established by Susan Davies, Marvin Ellison, and Glenn Miller during the seminary's last capital campaign in honor of Eleanor Haney, to underwrite a scholarship to be granted to a student who had demonstrated the capacity for a socially active ministry.
Elly, as Dr. Haney preferred to be called, was the quintessential Christian activist, dedicated to a variety of peace and justice issues. She co-edited a book with Susan Davies entitled Redefining Sexual Ethics. Dr. Davies continues to work in Elly's honor on the Board of the Eleanor Humes Haney Fund, which supports grassroots, post-Christendom work for justice in northern New England.
One of the goals of Bangor Seminary is to raise up a prophetic ministry, devoted to peace and justice, and this scholarship is intended to encourage a prophet-in-waiting to take up the task of speaking truth no matter what the cost.
Upon the recommendation of the faculty, it is my honor today to announce that the very first recipient of the Haney Award for Social Justice is Patti Stratton."
