ABC staff gathered in the V. Carney Hargroves Prayer & Meditation Center on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 for a service of dedication of a plaque honoring the late Rev. Dr. David M. Scholer (July 1, 1938-August 22, 2008) and the late Rev. Dr. Ella P. Mitchell (October 18, 1917-November 20, 2008), American Baptist "giants in the faith." The plaque will be hung in their honor in the prayer and meditation center.
The plaque read, "In grateful tribute to Rev. Dr. David M. Scholer and Rev. Dr. Ella P. Mitchell, advocates for Women in Ministry, whose scholarship, ministry and writings opened hearts and doors for women in ministry." June 27, 2009
At the June 2009 Biennial in Pasadena, Dr. Scholer and Dr. Mitchell were honored at the Women in Ministry luncheon for their work as advocates for women in ministry. Jeannette Scholer and Henry Mitchell, as well as other friends and family, were present at this luncheon.
At the dedication service, the music prelude was played by Susan Bogle, with a Welcome by Virginia Holmstrom and a Dedication Litany led by Joyce Lake. The service was officiated with Reflections and Prayer by Rev. Marilyn Turner (whose own ministry was shaped by that of Dr. Ella Mitchell).
Diane Chen, professor of NT and assistant academic dean at Palmer Theological Seminary, shared reflections during the service. Chen was one of Dr. Scholer's former students when he taught at Fuller, and he was also one of her dissertation readers.
Dr. Scholer's wife, Jeannette Scholer (who resides in Pasadena, CA), was present at the service, and shared memories of David and his love and work for ABC.
