What the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering Means to Me

After pastoring for 39 years, Harold Kruger “doesn’t do the ‘Reverend’ now,” but still preaches occasionally at the United Baptist Church, in Saco, Maine. From his birthplace in Indiana, to Maine to Massachusetts and New York, and back to Maine again, Kruger has been preaching and teaching all his adult life.

He continues to preach occasionally at United Baptist Church and at a weekly men’s group and Sunday School. Retirement hasn’t diminished his sense of humor—he claims going from leading a congregation to being a layperson has been an adjustment—one of the things he learned is “to not be a problem for the present pastor,” Beverly Lowell.

He’s also gained fresh insight about what The Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) means to retirees. As a former pastor who often promoted the drive, he “egged them on to support (RMMO).” Today, he continues to support it. “I’m hoping that this year they will raise their gifts. It’s been a help because I found it tough financially going through ministry. MMBB has been very supportive of my wife and I in these years of retirement…so I will do what I can to emphasize this offering.”

He adds, “I am thankful for this opportunity to share with others who will be contributing to this offering. And to my fellow American Baptists: God bless you for your giving and supporting a pastor—and if you haven’t yet—get on board!”

The Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) for 2017 begins after Thanksgiving. To donate or for more information, please contact your church or visit www.abc-usa.org/RMMO or www.mmbb.org/RMMO.
