ABCUSA Haitian Alliance Members Visit ABC Mission Center

Members of the ABCUSA Haitian Alliance visited the Mission Center on March 1, 2018 and met with General Secretary Rev. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, to discuss pastoral issues and concerns of particular relevance to the Alliance’s history and future. Attendees included: Rev. Dr. Edgard Nicolas, Paster, Haitian Baptist Church at the Crossroads; Rev. Dr. Francel L. Jacques, Haitian Baptist Church at the Crossroads; Rev. Dr. Lemaire Alerte, Haitian Evangelical Church of Jesus Christ; Deacon Jean Ducasse, Eglise Baptist Nouvelle Jerusalem; and Rev. Dr. Gerard Jeanlouis, Eglise Baptist Marantha. On behalf of the Office of the General Secretary, Associate General Secretary Rev. Dr. Kevin Walden also participated in the discussions.

The Alliance of Haitian Baptists traces its history back to 1974, and has grown to 48 congregations in eight regions. This growth has been accompanied by challenges, including the loss of several congregations due to financial, leadership, theological and polity issues. Throughout the decades, this movement has remained faithful and vibrant, with annual gatherings that usually have about 150-200 participants, as well as ABC-related missionaries, staff and Baptist Convention leaders from Haiti. Following the 2010 earthquake which devastated many parts of the island, the Haitian Alliance promoted many relief efforts, in coordination with American Baptist Churches regions and the American Baptist Home Mission Societies.DSC_0212
