Join in Making American Baptist Biking History in Portland
VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 5/16/17)—American Baptist Home Mission Societies will co-sponsor “American Baptists Bike” in partnership with the Rev. G. Travis Norvell, pastor of Minneapolis’ Judson Memorial Baptist Church, at the 2017 Biennial Mission Summit in Portland, Ore.
The half-mile bike ride—at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 30—will offer Biennial Mission Summit attendees a healthy, fun way to lift up awareness of environmental issues, along with the opportunity to participate in setting a world record of the most Baptists and clergy riding bikes in Portland.
Bikes will be provided by BIKETOWN, Portland’s bike-share program, for a $10 registration fee that includes:
- use of the bike throughout the three-day Biennial Mission Summit;
- commemorative T-shirt; and
- water bottle.
If you feel concerned about what you can do to care for the environment, join with American Baptists in Portland to set a record, have fun and pedal the way to a new future. A bicycle can be a vehicle for changing the world.
Norvell—an avid biker who set the wheels in motion for this event when he discovered that there are no world records for clergy or religious groups riding bicycles—encourages American Baptists to take part in the event and “be part of making history.”
Event planning team member Laura Miraz, Ph.D., associate executive director, Human Resource Services, ABHMS, adds: “This is not just about setting a record but also about wellness, having fun and caring for creation.”
Register by June 6 to receive a T-shirt and water bottle. If you don’t ride a bicycle, consider sponsoring a rider.
