Judson Press Names Miriam Gutierrez as Recipient of 2013 Ministry Award

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 2/5/14)—Rev. Miriam Z. Gutierrez of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, has been named as the recipient of the 2013 Judson Press Ministry Award in recognition of her longtime relationship with Judson Press, a ministry of American Baptist Home Mission Societies.

Gutierrez served for several years in the early 1990s as a Spanish-language editor with Judson Press and has continued to ensure that Judson Press resources have been available by writing, editing, translating, sharing ideas and providing feedback on a wide variety of projects. “Miriam has been a thoughtful colleague, omni-competent contributor and friend of Judson Press over many years,” said Judson Press Publisher Laura Alden. “Most of all, she has seen her work in publishing as an important part of her ministry, for which we are very grateful.”

Gutierrez is also co-author with Angel Luis Gutierrez and Juan Angel Gutierrez of “Herencia e identidad” (“Baptist Heritage and Identity”), published by Judson Press.

The Judson Press Ministry Award recognizes individuals who share Judson’s publishing ministry in a significant way “with a ready and willing Christian spirit and for the joy of serving God.” The award was first presented in 2007; recipients have included Victoria Goff, Dr. Wilda (“Wendy”) Morris, Dr. Samuel McKinney, Peter and Peggy Wolf, Dr. Gardner Taylor and Arthur Munson.

Award recipients receive a framed citation and copies of all newly published Judson Press books as they are released. In addition, their names are inscribed on a permanent plaque that hangs in the American Baptist Mission Center in Valley Forge, Pa.

Dr. Roberto Dieppa, executive minister for American Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico, noted that Gutierrez will be honored at the upcoming annual meeting of the Baptist Churches of Puerto. “We have many things to say about Miriam,” said Dieppa, “but we fall short in describing the love and admiration that we have for her. Miriam is a faithful collaborator in the work of the Kingdom of God. Her perseverance and dedication in all of her projects demonstrates the love she has for God and the passion she has for peace and justice.”
