Solomon Temple Missionary Baptist Church Partners with Open Door Ministries
Pamela Williams led a team of 10 excited and motivated missionaries from Solomon Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Denver, CO, in a three-day urban plunge August 16-18, 2013. Open Door Ministries, located in Denver, sponsored the plunge. Open Door provides practical help and hope to people in Denver’s inner city who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. Specifically, Open Door Ministries provides transitional homes for young mothers and their children, as well as for single women who do not have children with them. Mary Tellis, associate minister at Solomon Temple, serves as the Associate Executive Director at Open Door.
The missionaries participated in a prayer walk on East Colfax. “I was really moved when we were in the prayer circle and strangers were joining in and all they wanted was prayer,” said Demixica Coleman-Gipson. The team served breakfast to more than 200 homeless men and women and engaged in a scavenger huntthat helped them understand what it would be like to not have a home, food, or the necessary resources to survive. “There are many ways to love, but this first starts with me opening my heart and eyes to what is really around me,” said Denise Gipson. The missionaries from Solomon Temple attended a diverse worship service where the majority of worshippers were from the homeless community. They experienced ministry in a different context and left motivated, encouraged, and ready to serve like Jesus wherever they are called.
