Judson Press Book Makes Funeral Preaching a Teachable Moment

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 6/14/13)—”What I propose here is a new approach to preaching funerals,” pastor, scholar, and author Peter Wherry explains, “an approach that is pastoral, holistic, and healing.” In his new book, pastors and preachers will discover more than conventional homiletics theory about mechanics and methodology. In it, Wherry envisions anew the content of preaching in the shadow of death.

Preaching Funerals in the Black Church: Bringing Perspective to Pain by Peter M. Wherry is an invaluable guide for ministering to families and the community in times of grief, dying, and death. This resource offers practical wisdom transcending traditions, cultures, and faith perspectives.

Chapters include practical wisdom about:

• How “preaching” begins long before the funeral service starts
• Finding and selecting the text
• How to make the most of sermon structure in funeral preach

Preaching Funerals in the Black Church: Bringing Perspective to Pain provides sermons by noted preachers that demonstrate effective methods and structure. Contributors include:
