American Baptist Leaders Endorse Interfaith Call to Action

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 4/20/12)—The Rev. Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins III, executive director of American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS), and the Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley, general secretary of American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), have endorsed a Call to Action created by Interfaith Moral Action on Climate. The Call for Interfaith Actions on Climate Change, April 21-27, aligns with Earth Day, which is Sunday, April 22, 2012. (View the Call to Action)

The Call to Action states, “As people of faith and spirituality we are deeply concerned about the effects of climate change ravaging our planet, and we are compelled by our traditions and collective conscience to take action together on this deeply moral challenge.”

This Call to Action is in line with the American Baptist Policy Statement on Ecology, which says, “Ecology and justice are inseparable. The threat to the global environment presents American Baptists with a call for prompt and vigorous response. As Christians and faithful stewards, we bear the responsibility to affirm and support programs, legislation, research and organizations that protect and restore the vulnerable and the oppressed, the earth as well as the poor.” (Click here to read the policy statement)

This Earth Day, American Baptists are encouraged to consider the call to action in their daily lives.

“Our Call is: To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8). We must hold forth a brighter vision for our human future within the community of creation as we seek commitment to a set of clear, widely held moral principles.”
