VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 1/19/12)—Paul V. Moore, 94, former deputy executive director and treasurer of the Board of Educational Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), passed away at Kobacker House, Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 21. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 64 years.
As deputy executive director, he was responsible for the development and publication of Sunday school materials, Christian higher education, Judson Press, American Baptist (AB) Women, AB Men, the Commission on the Ministry, AB Historical Society, AB Assembly in Green Lake, Wis., and the ABCUSA Division of Communication.
He assumed deputy executive director duties in 1973, while retaining the responsibilities of treasurer to which he was assigned in 1967. He joined ABCUSA as assistant treasurer of the Board of Educational Ministries in 1963.
Moore took a one-year leave of absence from ABCUSA in 1976 to serve as provost and chief executive officer of American Baptist-related institution Florida Memorial College, which was facing financial crisis. Under his leadership, the college achieved financial stability.
He resigned from ABCUSA in 1981 to accept the position of acting president of Bacone College, Muskogee, Okla., a member institution of the American Baptist Association of Colleges and Universities.
Moore was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Moore was a member of Karl Road Christian Church, Columbus, where he was an elder and financial secretary.
Moore enjoyed painting, writing poetry and singing. He performed in the Gillie Senior Center Chorus, Columbus. He had served on the boards of Bacone College; Florida Memorial College, Opa Locka; and AB Seminary of the West, Berkeley, Calif. He had been active in the professional societies and community organizations of the various areas in which he lived, including as president of the board of the Jamestown, N.Y., Chapter of the National Association of Accountants. His wife had been employed by the Board of National Ministries.
He graduated summa cum laude from Niagara University, Niagara Falls, N.Y., and received an honorary doctorate from Florida Memorial College. He also participated in the AB lay ministry program and had been enrolled part time at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, now known as Palmer Theological Seminary.
He was predeceased by his parents, Linford Sr. and Cecil, brother Linford Jr. and sister Shirley Hoy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Gail, wife of Fred Taschner, Karen, wife of Randy Willis, and Barbara Moore; three grandsons, Scott and Keith Taschner and Robert Willis; sister Viola, wife of Edward Goit; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in spring.
